Ferrari 430 Spider Bio Fuel Concept

Ferrari has chosen Detroit as the venue for the presentation at a biofuel-powered F430 Spider in recognition of growing interest in North America in alternative sources of energy. 

The development of an engine powered by the biofuel E85 comes as part of a research and development program announced during the Technological Innovation Conference held at Maranello last June as part of our 60th Anniversary Celebrations. On that particular occasion, Ferrari also unveiled projects focused on improving the energy of the whole car which would in turn lower fuel consumption and emissions levels. The ultimate aim being, of course, to cut the latter by 40% by 2012. The Ferrari F430 Spider Biofuel uses an 85% ethanol mix and was developed with using experience gleaned in competition. In fact, Formula 1’s technical regulations demand that petrol (gasoline) with 5.75% biomass-derived content must be used, while the FIA GT and American Le Mans Series (ALMS), both of which were dominated by the F430 GT2 in 2007, use fuels with 10% ethanol. Furthermore, E10 biofuels will be employed in the next A1GP Championship which Ferrari will be supplying with V8 engines. Once again, in fact, the track has proved an excellent testing ground for innovative solutions which, if successful, can then be passed on to production cars. All of the other technical characteristics have remained unchanged with respect to a standard production engine, however. The use of this type of biofuel and the modifications made have resulted in a significant increase in maximum power output (+ 10 hp at the same rpm) and torque (+ 4%) yet overall weight was unchanged. The advantages to the environment translate too into a 5% drop in CO2 emissions.

Nevertheless, the Crosstour is a solid utility vehicle. The overall exterior dimensions are short enough for agility in city commuting and parking, though long enough to provide a decent amount of cargo space. The trunk has good storage space, and with the seats down, the combined space is generous enough for most moderate hauling jobs. Like other Hondas, the Crosstour drives well and delivers decent gas mileage.

I achieved 24 mpg in mixed driving. The V6 engine produces 271 horsepower yet seems underpowered when merging and stepping on the gas. Passengers in the back seat should expect tight headroom, and the driver will struggle to see out of the narrow rear window. –

The Superamerica 45, was commissioned by New York collector and enthusiast Peter Kalikow Ferrari Special Projects division of the Ferrari to mark 45 years since he became a customer Ferrari. The one-off is based on the 599 GTB Fiorano and has been called internally by Ferrari Design and designed and built in house.

The main novelty is a carbon fiber upper rotating disk, which incorporates a rear screen and a rotary mechanism similar to that adopted in the 575-based Superamerica. The boot area is entirely new for the house roof, when opened, and is now in carbon fiber with an optimized design to reduce drag and increase rear downforce. The rear buttresses are body color, rear part of the wheelarches, and incorporate quarterlights back. The side view is distinguished by double-air intakes in the front wing.
Ferrari Superamerica 45 also features a chrome front grille and specific special polished aluminum pillars, mirrors and door handles. Ferrari Superamerica Body is an exclusive Blu Antille finish, a color that matches an important car in the collection of client – a 1961 400 Superamerica Cabriolet nr. 2331SA. The wheels are in body color with polished diamonds, contrasting with the rays. The roof and other elements of carbon fiber body – front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser – are in a special contrasting darker blue, a theme that is carried into the cabin which features dark blue line carbon fiber trim and zone driver. Ferrari Enzo 2011

Thought by many enthusiasts as the ultimate modern Ferrari, the limited-edition Enzo will be a hard act to follow for the Italian automaker. The second-generation Enzo, also named after the brand’s famous founder, promises to take performance-and, surprisingly, efficiency-to a new level.

Like the original Enzo, the car’s successor will be a range-topping supercar aimed at immortalizing the legendary founder of the marque. Available only to select current Ferrari owners, the next-generation Enzo will serve as the brand’s performance and technology showcase.

Based-at least in concept-on the Ferrari Millechili show car (though the production Enzo replacement won’t carry that name), the performance car will be loaded with the technology learned from years of Formula One experience.

It is expected to be driven by a mid-mounted V8 engine, rather than the Maserati-based V12 that powered the Enzo which should easily exceed 700 horsepower. Though fuel efficiency is hardly a Ferrari selling point, the car must follow the more recent European Union standards, meaning a new emphasis has been rumored that Ferrari will use twin-turbocharging to make the most out of a smaller-displacement (think under 6 liters) V8 engine.

The key to addressing the fuel economy issue is to reduce weight and size significantly, which should bring the car well down from the just-over 3,000 lbs. of its predecessor; rumors out of Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters indicate that weight could approach 2,200 lbs. Improved aerodynamics, including adjustable front and rear spoilers, will not only help the new Enzo stick to the asphalt at maximum speeds, but it will also certainly reduce fuel consumption.
